Soil inorganic carbon sequestration through alkalinity regeneration using biologically induced weathering of rock powder and biochar

چکیده
Soil inorganic carbon (SIC) accounts for about half of the C reserves worldwide and is considered more stable than soil organic (SOC). However, acidification, driven mainly by nitrogen (N) fertilization can accelerate SIC losses, possibly leading to complete loss under continuous intensive N fertilization. Carbonate-free soils are less fertile, productive, prone erosion. Therefore, minimizing carbonate losses essential health climate change mitigation. Rock/mineral residues or powder have been suggested as a cheaper source amendments increase alkalinity. slow mineral dissolution limits its efficient utilization. microorganisms play vital role in weathering rocks their inoculation with enhance rates. Biochar an alternative material amendments, particular, bone biochar (BBC) contains higher Ca Mg that induce even This review covers i) contribution mechanism rock alkalinity generation, ii) BBC alkalinity, iii) microbial accelerating generation through enhanced dissolution. We conclude using residues/BBC combined agents could mitigate acidification also improve agricultural circularity.

Soil carbon sequestration and biochar as negative emission technologies.
Despite 20 years of effort to curb emissions, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions grew faster during the 2000s than in the 1990s, which presents a major challenge for meeting the international goal of limiting warming to <2 °C relative to the preindustrial era. Most recent scenarios from integrated assessment models require large-scale deployment of negative emissions technologies (NETs) to reach th...

Desertification, a natural process, is exacerbated by anthropogenic activities. It reduces soil productivity, jeopardizes food security, impairs environment quality, accelerates global warming and exacerbates global security risks. Degradation of soil and vegetation aggravates the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The biophysical processes of soil and vegetation degradation are ...
متن کاملSoil Inorganic Carbon Sequestration Following Afforestation Is Probably Induced by Pedogenic Carbonate Formation in Northwest China
In arid and semiarid areas, the effects of afforestation on soil organic carbon (SOC) have received considerable attention. In these areas, in fact, soil inorganic carbon (SIC), rather than SOC, is the dominant form of carbon, with a reservoir approximately 2-10 times larger than that of SOC. A subtle fluctuation of SIC pool can strongly alter the regional carbon budget. However, few studies ha...
متن کاملEvaluation and implementation of methods for quantifying organic and inorganic components of biochar alkalinity
The Boehm titration, originally developed to characterize carbon blacks and activated carbons, has earned growing attention as a method for characterization of acid and base properties of biochar (Boehm, 1994; Goertzen et al., 2010). The method is based on the principle that strong acids and bases will react with all bases and acids, respectively, whereas the conjugate bases of weak acids will ...
